The Most Comprehensive Non-Invasive Treatment For Aging Skin!
In modern skin care we evaluate and decide on treatment programs of aging skin with much more sophistication than in years past. Aspects of aging skin involve brown (age) spots of pigment, fine lines, dilated or "broken" blood vessels, roughness, and larger wrinkles related to underlying muscle activity. In deciding on treatment, our goals are the same as our patients, we want more noticeable improvement with as little down time as possible.
Rarely in plastic surgery does a treatment modality come along that brings about so much exciting change with so little down time. The treatment we are discussing here is light based therapy, Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL. The specific aging aspects that we are considering are widespread in our sun damaged aging population: brown (age) spots of pigment, enlarged pores, and dilated "broken" blood vessels, some large enough to see individually but often tiny and widespread just giving a red blush to areas of the face. With three or four brief office visits spaced just three weeks apart, there can be quite noticeable, and at times, dramatic reduction in brown pigment and dilated vessels. Yes, some aggressive skin care products can nicely reduce pigment, and we encourage these products as they bring about other benefits as well; however, appreciable results may take several months and they may increase the possibility of skin irritation.
For the redness problem mentioned, let's look at those individuals with the most severe form of it - the ever increasing Rosacea population. IPL systems are a relatively new addition to the arsenal of possible treatments for rosacea. Recent studies evaluating the efficacy of intense pulse light (IPL) treatment on Rosacea patients found that 83 percent of patients had less redness, 75 percent decreased flushing and improved skin texture, and 64 percent less acne break outs. If we look at alternative treatments, there are lasers that treat rosacea; however, this mode of treatment often results in a considerably longer recovery with an increase in redness and swelling lasting two to three days. There are also lasers which treat brown pigment, but they also require a moderate amount of recovery. The IPL, unlike lasers, can actually treat the brown pigment and vessels simultaneously with less recovery than either of the lasers. Unlike lasers, IPL treatments can also reduce pore size and possibly even tighten skin. Generally, lasers treat only one aspect of aging and require considerable recovery times from several days to two weeks or more. The IPL addresses multiple aspects of aging with minimal recovery. Most patients can go back to work immediately with just a little redness.
