Lip Augmentation is an exciting non-surgical form of cosmetic enhancement that has seen tremendous growth in the last couple of years.  Newer injectables that have become available offer us more predictable and lasting results.  Patients who were born with thin lips or those who have lost volume associated with aging are able to obtain a softer, more subtle look.  As you can see from the photos below, the results are natural looking and can be tailored to each patient's preference.  The amount of augmentation is easily adjustable and we can start with smaller amounts in several areas and add more.  I like to have the patient frequently look in the mirror to check on progress as we add small amounts.

RestylaneTM is now a preferred treatment for lip enhancement.  With many years of experience and use by millions of patients for a variety of facial areas worldwide, it has an unparalleled safety record.  Restylane is composed of hyaluronic acid, a natural component of the human body. Therefore, no allergy testing is required.  The hyaluronic acid of RestylaneTM is not obtained from animal or human sources. The FDA approval of RestylaneTM has presented us with an extremely safe filler for deep folds and wrinkles on the face.  Because of its success in adding fill and plumping beneath the facial skin surface, Restylane's applications were extended to shaping and augmenting of the lips.  Using RestylaneTM in the lips is considered "off label"; the FDA leaves this type of use outside the FDA approval up to the judgment of the practitioner.  It is a crystal clear gel that is placed directly into the lips following a topical local anesthetic that is applied prior to the procedure to minimize any discomfort.  Patients may experience some swelling and redness for four to five days so it is best to plan around important events.  Another advantage to Restylane is that it lasts five to nine months in most patients.

Another option for lip augmentation is using the patient's own fat as the plumping material.  While it may seem preferable to use one's own tissue, the results are not as predictable.  Fat injections are easily done on an outpatient basis although there is usually considerable swelling for one to two weeks.  Local anesthetic is injected into the lips prior to the procedure as well as another area of the body from which the fat graft will be taken.  Some patients have a considerable amount of the fat stay permanently in the lips but in others it is absorbed and not noticeable after three to six months.

A consultation with Dr. Hubbard or our Skin Care Director, Denise Kail, RN can offer specific treatment options that give you a subtle change or a dramatic new look!
