Dr. Thomas J. Hubbard has been practicing plastic surgery in the Tidewater community since 1993, serving patients in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Newport News, Williamsburg, Suffolk and many other cities in Virginia.
Since beginning private practice in Virginia Beach, his emphasis has been on cosmetic surgery. Dr. Hubbard understands that the key to excellence in cosmetic surgery is communication.
He focuses on the individual concerns of each patient to give a more personalized result. Many patients feel they already know him from his work on the television programs 'Plastic Surgery Insights' and 'Your Best Decisions in Cosmetic Surgery.' They recognize not only Dr. Hubbard's eminent qualifications and skills as a surgeon, but also his gentle demeanor and artistic approach.
Dr. Hubbard has dual board certifications in both Plastic Surgery and Otolaryngology. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the Rhinoplasty Society, and the American College of Surgeons.
One of nine children, Dr. Hubbard was raised in central Illinois. He was valedictorian of his high school class and then graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Notre Dame. There, he was also an elected member of Phi Beta Kappa and received the Baldinger Award for scholastic excellence. He attended Washington University School of Medicine and was elected membership to Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society that comprises the top ten percent of medical students.
Dr Hubbard later completed two residencies in complimentary specialties: Plastic Surgery and Otolaryngology. Otolaryngology was a five year surgery program at Washington University in St. Louis. This entailed extensive surgical experience with all layers of delicate facial and neck anatomy. His Plastic Surgery residency consisted of three more years of surgical training at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. This culminated with a year of Chief Residency at Loyola University and Cook County Hospital. This double board certification shows a love and commitment to surgery and an extreme level of comfort with the procedures he performs.
Dr. Hubbard further pursued his interest in cosmetic surgery with a year of cosmetic plastic surgery fellowships. This was at renowned national and international institutions including Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia and Wexham Park Hospital outside London, England. His pursuit of excellence in cosmetic surgery has led to multiple publications in textbooks and peer review journals. He continues to publish regularly and give presentations on the national, regional, and local level.
Dr. Hubbard is noted for his volunteer work in third world countries. This began with two months in an East Africa medical clinic in 1983. Since then he has participated in volunteer reconstructive surgery trips to South America, Central America, the Philippines, Central Asia and the Caribbean with Christian Medical Society, Operation Blessing and Operation Smile. In 1994 he founded the non-profit organization Medical Supply Rescue and Recycle (MSRR) which collects excess surgical supplies and used equipment from area hospitals to send to Africa and Central and South America. In 1998 the US Ambassador recognized him for donating supplies to the country of Sierra Leon in West Africa. In 2002, with funding directly from Hubbard Plastic Surgery, MSRR began purchasing new surgical instruments to send to surgeons in impoverished countries.
Dr. Hubbard and his wife Suzanne reside in Virginia Beach, Virginia. They enjoy traveling, biking, tennis, and attending lots of soccer games with their two children, Nicholas and Natalie.
