BREAST REDUCTION GENERAL INFORMATION
Breast reduction surgery decreases breast size and weight while improving shape. Symptoms of back, neck, and shoulder pain are lessened or eliminated in most patients. Liposuction can reduce breast weight with less length of scar, but size decrease is much less predictable and shape is often not improved. Fortunately, newer breast reduction techniques accomplish the same goals with less length of scar in many individuals.
Indications: Excessive breast size that causes symptoms of back or neck pain, bra strap indentations, shoulder pain, rash beneath the breasts or feelings of disproportion.
Intended Results: Smaller breast size with better shape and relief of some or all symptoms.
Procedure Description: This procedure is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Excess skin, breast tissue and fat are removed leaving a circular scar around the nipple/areola which extends downward to and beneath the fold beneath the breasts.
Recuperation and Healing: A wrap-around dressing is placed for 2-3 days. Most sutures dissolve but others are removed in 1 week. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. One can return to work in a week. Pinkness of the scars usually fades in the first year.
Other Options: Liposuction can also reduce breast size in certain cases. The success of liposuction is much better if there is a high ratio of fat to breast tissue in the breasts. Breasts that fluctuate greatly in size with weight changes often indicate a greater proportion of fat in the breasts. Mammograms also can give some indication of the ratio. True breast gland tissue as opposed to fat is very difficult to remove with liposuction.
