THE SCIENCE OF FACIAL IMPLANTS HAVE SEEN TWO GREAT CHANGES IN THE PAST TEN YEARS:
First, the long-term safety of silicone has now been firmly established. Second, while these long-term studies were being performed, cheek and chin implants were completely redesigned. Now with many shapes and sizes of implants, some with computer generated high tech designs, the results of surgery are much more natural and the ability to rejuvenate significantly more powerful.
Chin implants can now not only bring out the chin to balance the profile, but the proper implant can also extend in front of the jowls and make them less apparent. Cheek implants can not only highlight the cheekbones but extend into the mid cheek to minimize hollowing that occurs there with age. There are now implants to fill the upper lip area at the base of the nose, as we now know bone is lost in that area with age. There are implants to fill in depressions on both sides of the base of the nose as a hollowing there can occur, especially in those who had teeth pulled as teenagers. There are implants to build up the bridge of the nose much more reliably and natural in appearance than those in the past. Each of these procedures is customized to the patient's individual needs.
Indications: A chin or cheekbones or other area of the face that is of inadequate size of disproportionate to other facial features.
Intended Results: More attractive facial proportions and facial silhouette. More aesthetic facial features.
Procedure Description: These procedures are done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia and sedation or general anesthesia. Chin implant incisions are made beneath the chin. Cheek implant incisions are made inside the cheek beneath the lower eyelashes or in front of the ear. Incisions for other facial implants are highly individualized.
Recuperation and Healing: Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Sutures on the outside are removed in 5-7 days. Sutures inside the mouth dissolve. With a chin implant one can return to work in 4-5 days. There is more swelling with cheek implants and a 7-10 day recovery is best. Other facial implant recoveries vary with the size of the implant and location on the face.
Material: A variety of materials are used for facial implants and each has its own advantages in different areas. These include silicone, Gore-Tex, and others.
Other Options: Fat injections with one's own fat are always an option to build up an area of the face.

More Information:
It is interesting to look at models in magazines and analyze what makes them so attractive. In the vast majority, besides nice skin, it is their facial proportions that set them apart. Even in Greek and Roman times it was certain relationships among the cheeks, chin, and nose that were seen as beautiful. The shaping or molding of these features with implants has advanced greatly in the past ten years. Now these facial implants in most cases can do their shaping and sculpting with invisible margins or outlines. Amazingly, they are almost as difficult to feel. The facial implants that Dr. Hubbard uses are composed of a variety of materials, all used in surgery for many years. Experience has shown which type of material works best in what area. But deciding which implant is best for you requires careful analysis and discussion with Dr. Hubbard. Double mirrors, computer imaging and review of other before and after photos will greatly aid in the decision. This procedure must be very unique to you. At Hubbard Plastic Surgery we are committed to excellence which means tailoring surgical plans to individual needs.
