GENERAL INFORMATION ON GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY

Gynecomastia surgery or male breast reduction involves surgical correction of excess breast tissue.  Even in men, this usually involves both excess breast fat and glandular tissue. As skin removal is rarely necessary, only minimal scars are needed to accomplish liposuction and direct gland excision. Both procedures are used in sequential sculpting.

Indications:  Excessive breast tissue or fatty accumulation in the male breast.

Intended Results:  Reduction of breast size and contouring to a more masculine shape.

Procedure Description:  This procedure is done under general anesthesia. Excess breast tissue is removed through an incision beneath the nipple areola right at the border of light and dark skin. Excess fat is removed with liposuction. An occasional patient needs extra skin removed to correct sag.

Recuperation and Healing:  This procedure is done on an outpatient basis. After surgery there is an elastic compression dressing and drains which are removed several days after surgery. One can return to work in 4-5 days.

Other Options: Liposuction can be performed alone in the occasional patient who has only fat excess without actual breast tissue enlargement.
