OTOPLASTY IS SURGICAL RESHAPING OF THE EARS 

Early in the last century it was believed that prominent ears could be cured by just removing skin behind the ears. But quickly it was learned that skin had little to do with the problem or solution. The problem is actually improper development of the underlying cartilage that controls ear shape. In otoplasty, little or no skin is removed but an incision behind the ear is used to access the underlying cartilage. Then carefully pre-planned zones of the cartilage are weakened so they bend the proper amount. The shape is held with sutures beneath the skin.

Indications: Ears that protrude too far from the side of the head or have abnormal shape.

Intended Result: Normal ear position with normal folds and shape.

Procedure Description: In adults, this surgery is done under local anesthesia and the individual can then actually drive him or herself home.

Recuperation and Healing: A dressing that wraps around the head is worn for 3-4 days.  Oral medication easily controls any discomfort.  One can return to work in 4-6 days but exertion and exercise must be avoided for 10 days.  An elastic headband is worn only at night for 2 months.

More Information:  Modern otoplasty or "ear pinning" is molding the ears into a more normal position and often improving the actual shape of the ear as well. Fortunately, this can be done with an approach on the backside of the ears with the resulting scars hidden there. At certain key sites the ear cartilage is weakened and small permanent sutures placed. The surgery is easily tolerated in adults with complete local anesthesia. The ears are one of the easiest sites on the body to completely anesthetize. In children, general anesthesia is usually necessary.
